Green Living Series: Purple Loosestrife
Sunday, May 4 at 2 pm
Indoor lecture
Speaker: Haley Breniser, Community Wildlife Director, Kalamazoo Nature Center
Purple Loosestrife is a plant that is invasive in many wetlands.  Haley will explain the relationship and biology of Purple Loosestrife and the Galerucella spp beetle which was approved by the USDA as a bio control method in 1992.  Eliminating invasive species is important to promote biodiversity of native species.

Indoor/outdoor hike for Adults, 14+
Ray Adams, KNC Research Director has been on staff since 1967 and has an amazing passion for birds. During this special morning Ray will share his passion and knowledge while we look for the early warblers such as Yellow-rumped Warbler, the Pileated Woodpecker, thrushes, and neotropical migrants such as Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and Baltimore Oriole.  Birders of all skill levels are invited, please bring binoculars and field guide if you have them.  The program will be followed by a sumptuous continental breakfast inside the Interpretive Center.
 
Wildflower Folklore

Outdoor walk for adults and older children
 Join Sarah Hopkins for a leisurely afternoon stroll through the Pioneer Woods.  The Beech-Maple forest is the perfect habitat for spring wildflowers.  We will be looking for the later bloomers: Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Wild Ginger and Trillium, as well as many others.  Learn tips for identification and the folklore that surrounds their unique names.

Outdoor birding walk for adults and older children, rain or shine
Join Research Biologist, Brian Nelson and Naturalist, Kara Haas, to survey the nature center grounds, counting all the birds we see and hear along the way.  We will travel through several habitats including fen, forest, and a stretch of the Kalamazoo River watershed.  We will hope to see many different warblers, including Prothonotary, Cerulean, Bay Breasted, Cape May, and more.  This is what we’ll hope to see but no guarantees!
 
Spring Woodland Wildflower Photography Workshop

Hands on class/trip geared toward beginners
Join local Nature Photographers Dave & Josh Haas for the next in the series of Nature Photography Workshops.  This round the focus is on Spring Woodland Wildflowers on-site at the Kalamazoo Nature Center.  Learn not only how to respectfully enjoy these delicate flowers but also how to take inspiring photographs home with you.  Dave & Josh's work can be seen throughout Southwest Michigan at numerous Art Shows as well as on-line at www.glancesatnature.com.

Small Wonders: Birds

Parent led activities for ages 0-5
Explore nature with your child!  Interactive nature stations are set-up to encourage learning with your child, including time outdoors (weather permitting).  No registration is required; just drop in!  Children must be under age 5 and accompanied by an adult.
 
Bluebird Walk
Sunday, May 18 at 2 pm
Outdoor trail walk with activities
Bluebirds and tree swallows use nest boxes to lay their eggs and raise their young.  Follow Torrey Wenger, KNC research biologist, and visit nest boxes, record the number of eggs or babies within and watch them being banded if they are old enough.  Learn about bluebird biology and what you can do on your property to attract them.
 
Spring Comes to the Barn

The animals are back!  Come visit with Lacy, our Hafflinger pony, and all of her barnyard friends.  Baby chicks, sheep and goats are learning their way around the barnyard.  Learn about these baby animals through interactive games and a craft.
 
Boomers and Beyond: Nature Photography

Join our KNC staff birders as they record the colorful, spring migrants who stop over in this city woods. Many of these birds fly from far away places in Central and South America to take advantage of this area. Spring Migrants
Saturday, May 17, 8:00 – 10:00am
Asylum Lake Preserve
Meet at parking lot near the bottom of the hill on Drake Rd., a quarter mile south of Stadium Dr.
Grab your binoculars and join us for the peak of the spring migration when millions or even billions of birds are moving north from their winter homes to their summer nesting sites.  Some of the species that we will look for are Baltimore Orioles, Scarlet Tanagers, Swainson’s thrush, Yellow Warblers, Gray Catbirds and Red-winged Blackbirds. Being prepared is always a good idea when you go out birding, so be sure to check these species out in your field guide before arriving so you know what it is you are looking for.

Join certified yoga instructor Anna Hess for a relaxing and rejuvenating evening of yoga.  Anna has taught yoga in our community for the past 10 years.  We are happy she will bring her unique style of Iyengar based yoga to the beauty of the Glen Vista Gallery. Please bring your own mat and props.
