These exciting 6-week courses for students 6-14 years of age are designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the natural world through fun and hands-on experiences!  Syllabi and parent information will be available on our website before each course (Fall program info coming soon). Families are asked to sign up to assist at a minimum of one session per class to provide appropriate supervision ratios for the students.

Explore one of our most common connections with nature: food! Each week of this course will focus on a different aspect of human-nature interactions through food science, farming and gardening techniques, and environmental studies. Students will gain confidence using age-appropriate tools, learn the science behind food preservation, and work to understand how their food gets from the ground to their dinner table. View the entire course schedule and program information here!

Winter 2016 (November 3 - December 15): Niches & Habitats

Winter Quarter
Home School Adventures: Niches & Habitas
Thursdays, November 3 - December 15 (No class November 24)
Picnics 12:30 pm, Class 1-3 pm

Plants and animals need homes as unique as they are! In this course, students will search for the nests, holes, and dens where organisms live, and explore the connections between living spaces, adaptations, and ecosystem roles. Each week will focus on a different type of habitat, as well as the creatures that live there. Students will use scientific measurements to look at the differences between ecosystems, build their own habitats, and learn to care for the natural homes around them.

Home School Adventures: Caring for Creatures
Thursdays, January 12 - February 16
Picnics 12:30 pm, Class 1-3 pm

Working with wild animals can be incredibly rewarding. Students will meet with our amazing KNC staff members, both human and animal, in this hands-on course. Students will learn what the animals that live in and around the Kalamazoo Nature Center need to survive, how we can provide for educational animals, and how scientists are helping wild animals every day. Students will get to assist in age-appropriate animal care activities, including feeding and socializing.

Spring 2017 (March 2 - Apr 13) - Springtime Species

Wander through a world of change as we explore how nature prepares for spring! Students will observe the largest and smallest organisms during this dynamic season, as well as measuring changes in the weather throughout the session. We’ll determine how plants help their seeds to survive, what baby animal need from their parents, and how the warmer weather sets the year in motion for all growing things.

Important Tips Before you Register Online


Save your Username and Password, you will use this account to register year to year (This account is separate from the KNC Website Account you may have created).  If you feel you are not being charged the correct prices when you review your order at check-out, please call Guest Services before you pay so that we can make sure your order is accurate.  Read the confirmation email carefully and open the attachments, this will be your receipt and will contain information about your child's upcoming home school experience.You will receive your confirmation email the morning after you register.

Refund and Cancellation Policy: No refunds for cancellations within one week (5 business days) from the class start date including illness or injury.  A $50 processing fee will be charged for any cancellation prior to one week before a class start date. If a session is canceled, you will be notified by the Monday before the first class's start date and you will receive a full refund.
