Well, a very slow week for newly arriving birds. Only added one new species for this week’s surveys at Kleinstuck and that was a Yellow Warbler that showed up on the 80-degree day and I have not heard or seen it since. So, this brings us up to 72 species so far for the season.
The last at least 10 years we have had Barred Owl visible most days along the stretch of trail coming in from Chevy Chase Blvd. However, this year I have not seen them at all, instead I have been seeing a Great Horned Owl in this area. Great Horned Owls can kill Barred Owls, so I am assuming that they have driven out the Barred Owls from this area. The Great Horned Owl is a little harder to find unless the Crows find it first. So, if you are out at Kleinstuck and hear the crows making a bunch of noise take a look because you might get a chance to spot the Great Horned Owl, which crows will constantly harass. Anyways fingers crossed for a much better week ahead.
