Can we shorten our program?

Can we shorten our program?

We have lots of great activities and information to share in our programs.  We can shorten it, but please know that we will be leaving something out of the program experience.

We love KNC programs and want to do two programs while we are there!

We love KNC programs and want to do two programs while we are there!

KNC educators do not recommend two programs in a day for your students.  Part of the experience of visiting the Kalamazoo Nature Center is simply being outside in nature and having the opportunity to explore.  Take some time to go for a hike on a trail, utilize some of our self guided activities (check out a list of activities here),  and encourage students to use their senses to enjoy their time outside.  Students that participate in more than one program in a day tend to have a shorter attention span, and less information retention during the second program.

We do offer guided hikes if you would prefer more structured outdoor exploration for your students. One of our naturalist educators would be happy to show you the ins and outs of one of the Kalamazoo Nature Center trails.

What is included with my program fee?

What is included with my program fee?

The fee covers your program, but also gives you full access to the Visitors Center and KNC’s many trails. The program fee covers a class of up to 30 students, your staff, and up to 5 adult chaperones.  (Preschool classes get admission for up to 40 students + parents)

How should we handle payment?

How should we handle payment?

Please check in with the front desk or with your educator, and have a headcount ready of students, staff, and parents.  Prior to your arrival, you will receive a reminder email from our program registrar that includes a worksheet for these headcounts. If you can prepare this sheet in advance and bring it with you, it will streamline your check-in. You are welcome to pay the day of your program, or we can send an invoice after the program.

What if I have more than 5 adult chaperones per class?

What if I have more than 5 adult chaperones per class?

Additional adults for grades K and up are $5 each if they are paid for as a group (group-rate admission).  If parents will be paying individually at the gate house or the front desk, they will be charged $7 each (regular admission).  Teachers can pay for additional adults on the day of your program, or we can include that cost in your invoice.

The fee covers your program, and the educator’s travel to your site. We do provide a discount for multiple programs occuring on the same day.

How many programs can you offer at our site in one day?

How many programs can you offer at our site in one day?

We can offer up to 3 programs at your site in one school day.

If you need to do 4 programs in one day for scheduling reasons, you can inquire with our registrar while registering to see if we can make an exception. Our answer will be dependent on your location, the program’s length, and the animal ambassador utilized for the program you are requesting.

What does the educator need to do a program in my classroom?

What does the educator need to do a program in my classroom?

Our educator will bring all of the supplies and props they need with them to your class. All they will need is a little space to set up, whether that is in the front of the room or on the edge of a carpet is dependent on the program and your classroom’s setup/age. Depending on the program, we may sometimes request schools utilize a stationary point for our educator to set up, and then to have your classes rotate through.

Some programs we bring to you might be well suited to schoolyard exploration, and our educators may ask in advance if, weather depending, we can take the students outside to investigate nature more closely.
