5:15pm-6:30pm Lecture:  "Race, class, gender, and environmental justice: A Global Perspective"
Mariam Konaté, Ph.D., Associate Professor of African American & African Studies & Gender and Women's Studies at Western Michigan University

This talk will discuss the importance of using an intersectional approach to analyze the multi-faceted impact of climate change and its environmental effects on people worldwide. As a global community, we are all interconnected because we are all sharing this planet. Climate change is a global challenge that impacts all of humanity, but not equally. Indeed, people who are the least responsible for climate change, the majority of whom are women who live in poverty are being burdened the most by climate change as they bear the brunt of its impact. Consequently, climate change exacerbates their already precarious living conditions. Tackling climate change thus, goes in tandem with addressing issues related to oppression as well as social and gender inequalities. It will equally require harnessing the essential knowledge women have about climate change and the critical contribution they can bring to finding the solutions to the impact of global warming.
