Come explore the universe of life that lies beneath the surface in this series of workshops. Delving into ponds, streams, soil and moss patches, participants will learn how to gather samples and to investigate using magnifying lenses and microscopes. We’ll document our observations as we go through drawing and writing in field journals.

Insect Investigators

Sunday, August 7, 10-11:30 am
In this hands-on program, participants will learn about some of the places insects like to hide. We’ll collect insects to take a closer look and investigate insect adaptations and the roles insects play in the environment as we walk along the Beech Maple Trail (0.7 mile, moderate hike).

Fossil Finders

Sunday, August 28, 10-11:30 am
Curious about the creatures that inhabited prehistoric Michigan? We’ll hunt for fossils in the old gravel pit off the Bluebird Trail and learn about Michigan’s past through the discoveries we make. Be ready for a steep hike to one of the highest points in Kalamazoo County!
