Adventure Skills Camp: 6th – 8th Grade

Each of Adventure Skills camp includes a backcountry campout onsite at KNC on Thursday. Campouts include site selection, food preparation, applying Leave No Trace Principles, and proper gear use. Gain leadership and teamwork experience on the Low Ropes Challenge Course with different themes each week. Note: Participants should be able to carry a 30lb pack, walk two miles a day, and learn and use backcountry bathroom techniques where there are no facilities available.
“ADVENTURE SKILLS” RUNS 9 AM–3 PM, MONDAY–FRIDAY WITH AN OVERNIGHT CAMPOUT 9 AM THURSDAY – NOON FRIDAY. Tents and 3 meals are provided. Tents are not shared. Please bring your own if you’d prefer.

Sessions

Session 1: June 13-17 | Iron Chef
Do you know the classic camp trials? Adventure to places you’ve never been at KNC this week. Choose new trails to hike and build up to the Bluebird Trail, then relax with your friends under the trees. Oh, the places we will go!
Session 2: June 20-24  |  Natural Artistry
Not only will you practice the classics like drawing and painting, you will play with clay, become a shutterbug and try some mediums that you may not expect. Try your hand with making your own sculpture out of materials from nature.
Session 3: June 27- July 1 | Hike of Your Life
Adventure to places you’ve never been at KNC. Choose new trails to hike and build up to the Bluebird Trail. Then relax with your friends under the trees, and don’t forget all the camp classics! Oh, the places we will go.
Session 4: July 11-15  |  Natural Work
Join KNC staff at work, participate in community science projects, get planting in the garden, uproot invasive species, clear the trails, and make enrichment toys for our animal ambassadors. Do you have what it takes to work in nature?
Session 5: July 18-22  |  Master Crafters
Try new art techniques like painting with nature brushes, create your own long-lasting bouquet using pine cones, and learn to weave using materials from nature. How unique will your craft be?
Session 6: July 25-30  |  Follow the Leader Olympics
Join forces with your group to be the ultimate adventure skills winners. Complete different challenges throughout the week as you are led by a different campmate for each activity to practice your skills at being a leader and teammate.
Session 7: August 1-5  |  Survival Master
Do you know a little something about surviving in the woods? Take it to the next step! Find out how to build the best fires, navigate yourself when you’re lost, and find out what to do when you forget your water bottle. Join experienced counselors in the fun of mastering the woods.
Session 8: August 8-12  |  In the Deep
Water is life! Go fishing at Source Pond. Conduct water quality experiments and search for macroinvertebrates. Wade in Trout Run and paint with water colors. Cool off with water games with your friends.

Adventure Trek: 6th – 8th Grade

Are you ready for the ultimate camp experience? Camp out for 4 nights and get to know West Michigan. Learn backcountry camping skills like trip planning, food preparation, campsite selection, Leave No Trace Principles and proper gear use. Gain leadership and teamwork experience on the Low Ropes Challenge Course. Note: Participants should be able to carry 30lb packs, walk two miles a day, and relieve themselves in areas where there are no facilities available.
“ADVENTURE TREKS” RUN 9 AM MONDAY – 3 PM FRIDAY. OVERNIGHT CAMPOUTS ARE MONDAY–THURSDAY.
Groups spend one night at KNC and the rest offsite. Tents and 3 meals are provided. Tents are not shared. Please bring your own if you prefer.

Session 3: June 27 – July 1  |  Rock & Water
Experience a charter fishing trip on Lake Michigan. Test for water quality of KNC’s water bodies with experiments and search for macroinvertebrates. Hike the dunes and enjoy water games. Learn about knots, gear, and hand hold tricks. Climb, boulder, and enjoy the challenge. Climb the walls and rappel at Climb Kalamazoo. Build resilience and leadership skills through on the low ropes. Every day is an adventure!

Adventure Farm Camp: Grades 6-8

A farm is a great place to experience nature while exploring the outdoors. Do you know what it takes to be a farmer? We’ll dig into all the facets involved in soil making, seeding, planting, tending, harvesting, and giving back to the land that provides our food. Each session will highlight the changes the farm goes through during the growing season. Plus, there will be plenty of time for all the activities you’ve grown to love at camp, like a hike to Source Pond, hammocking with friends, and team-building activities. The themes below describe additional activities we will add during that session of camp.

“ADVENTURE FARM CAMP” RUNS 9 AM–3 PM, MONDAY–FRIDAY
$395 MEMBER, $420 NON-MEMBER PER SESSION

Session 4: July 11-15  |  Onions and Greens
Don’t worry, this camp won’t make you cry. You will get to peel back the many layers of onion and greens to learn how plants work together. Discover perfect plant pairings for pest reduction. Learn about food and food justice while trying your hand at soil making, seeding, planting, tending, harvesting, and giving back to the land. You’ll grow your own harvest and make a meal.

Session 8: August 8-12  |  Tend and Till
Give it a rest! Put a garden bed to sleep for the season. As we set the stage for the season ahead, learn about giving more than we take away from the land. Dig in to soil making, seeding, planting, tending, harvesting, and giving back to the land. Grow

NEW! Neurodiversity Adventure Camp: 9-12 years old

Session 6: July 25-29  |  Uniquely You

“NEURODIVERSITY ADVENTURE CAMP” RUNS 10 AM–1 PM, MONDAY–FRIDAY
$195 MEMBER, $220 NON-MEMBER PER SESSION

Explore nature through your own lens. This camp is aimed at supporting the needs of our campers with unique learning needs. Learn to navigate through the wilderness with compass and mapping skills, read history in the rocks, explore the solar system and learn why we have seasons. Counselors will work with the registered participants to choose themes for this week, starting with these initial ideas. Note: Camp staff will be trained and supported by a teacher with a special education certification. Ratios will be 1 adult to every 3 children. All youth are welcome to register for every camp program we offer. This session is for children with unique learning needs. We welcome questions if you are wondering if this is a fit for you.
