The Kalamazoo Nature Center is happy to provide NEW GRIT Freedom Chairs available for check out during your visit! These all-terrain wheelchairs are available in adult and youth sizes and are specially designed for trail use.

With their innovative design, these chairs allow individuals with mobility challenges to explore the beautiful trails and natural scenery at the Center. The GRIT Freedom Chairs offer a unique combination of durability and ease of use, ensuring that everyone can enjoy an inclusive outdoor experience.

 

Accessible Trails:

Please inquire at the Visitor Center for more information on how to reserve a chair for your visit. Chairs can be checked out for use on the Habitat Haven Trail and throughout the Arboretum.  

 

Reservation:

To reserve a chair prior to your visit, please call Visitor Services at 269-381-1574 ext. 0. Chairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and a limited number are currently available. Children ages 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  

About the GRIT Freedom Chair: 

  • Weight Limit: 300 lbs / 136 kg
  • Height Limit: Currently used by riders from 4’10” – 6’8”.

About the GRIT Junior: 

  • Weight limit: 200 lbs / 90 kg

Children ages 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult

The GRIT Junior is the world’s first all-terrain kids wheelchair which features all the off-road, mud-sloshing, grass-conquering fun of a GRIT Freedom Chair…but for kids! With the GRIT Junior, young riders can join their friends and family members on hikes, with the option to self-propel or do so with some assistance. Rollin’ Through Nature: Golf Cart Adventure for All Abilities

Want a chance to get into the great outdoors, but need an accessible mobility option? A KNC educator will drive you on select trails with a golf cart at a leisurely pace to encourage observation, discovery, and conversation. These programs are included in regular KNC admission, but do require registration.
Pre-registered programs are offered Mondays-Saturdays. Please email the Registrar at least two weeks prior to your desired date at to sign up. Space is limited to five per tour.

Fee: Included in regular KNC admission. Registration required. Audience: All Ages (children must have an adult in attendance)
